Applications open for SAAMBR marine careers course
To mark its 75th anniversary, SAAMBR is offering 25 high school learners a fully sponsored, behind-the-scenes marine experience at uShaka Sea World. Applications for the three-day Young Ocean Ambassadors Programme are open and close on February 28.
IN celebration of its 75th anniversary, the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) has launched a free ’75 Young Ocean Ambassadors Programme’ from March 30 to April 1 at uShaka Sea World in Durban.
The fully sponsored three-day course is aimed at high school learners who dream of a future career linked to the ocean. SAAMBR spokesperson Ann Kunz said 25 learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 will be selected for this first intake. “Applicants must be able to arrange their own transport to uShaka Sea World for the three days and bring their own snacks or lunch,” said Kunz.
Applicants must be curious about careers in marine biology, environmental science, conservation, diving, research and education. The course offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at what working in the marine and conservation sector really involves.

“Participants will also take part in hands-on activities, discussions and career guidance sessions designed to inspire and empower the next generation of ocean leaders. But the experience doesn’t end after three days. As Young Ocean Ambassadors, learners will be invited to stay involved throughout the year by participating in beach clean-ups, community outreach projects, talks and conservation events, while sharing their own journeys as young ocean stewards,” said Kunz.
To be part of the programme, learners must apply online and are required to motivate why they should be selected as one of SAAMBR’s 75 Young Ocean Ambassadors. To apply visit https://www.saambr.org.za/marine-careers-guidance/. Applications close on February 28, and the first group of successful candidates will be notified by March 14.
