Mkhwanazi leads Friday night crime blitz in Durban’s Point area
A multidisciplinary task team led by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi shuts down illegal pub and detains undocumented foreign nationals in co-ordinated Friday night sweep in notorious Point precinct.
A SWEEPING multidisciplinary law enforcement operation led by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi brought parts of Durban to a standstill on Friday night, February 13, as authorities intensified efforts to clamp down on crime and restore order.
The SAPS-led operation saw officers seal off Dr Pixley kaSeme Street in the Point precinct while conducting co-ordinated raids and stop-and-search activities. The crackdown was part of a broader high-density operation that also targeted Umlazi and KwaMashu townships.

The police were joined by officials from the Department of Home Affairs and inspectors from the Department of Employment and Labour, reflecting a co-ordinated government response aimed at enforcing immigration, labour and liquor laws. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the operation sent a strong message to criminals.
“The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, led a multidisciplinary operation on Friday night which sealed off Dr Pixley kaSeme Street in the Point area of Durban as part of our ongoing efforts to stamp the authority of the State,” said Netshiunda.

He added that the focus of the operation included suspect raids, illegal immigrants, liquor outlet inspections and stop-and-search operations, with particular emphasis on illegal firearms and drugs.
During the operation in the Point area, police shut down a popular pub that was found to be operating illegally. Its manager, who is in the country unlawfully, was arrested and liquor was confiscated.

“Several suspects were arrested for possession of drugs and possession of a firearm without a licence. In Umlazi, a suspect was arrested for obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties,” said Netshiunda.
A number of undocumented foreign nationals were also arrested during the co-ordinated raids and will be processed in terms of immigration legislation. “These actions demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that all who live in and visit KwaZulu-Natal are safe and that the law is applied without fear or favour,” said Netshiunda.
