Forensic lab in Mayville to cut crime investigation delays
The Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure officially handed over the KZN Forensic Science laboratory to the SAPS to mitigate challenges in crime investigations and prosecutions in the province.
The KZN Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Mayville is hailed as the solution to mitigating challenges in criminal investigations.
It consolidates various forensic units that previously operated from multiple buildings, which faced infrastructure and security challenges, such as flooding, which would damage critical evidence. For example, one lab in Amanzimtoti proved “impossible to work, and compromised investigations”. The province is sitting on a backlog of 24 442 exhibits.
Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson said, “We may not wear the uniform of the police, but we can deliver the infrastructure that strengthens the hand of the police. We may not wear prosecutors’ robes but we can help ensure that the physical environment from which justice is supported is worthy of the task. And we may not conduct forensic analysis ourselves, but we can make sure that those who do have the kind of secure and fit-for-purpose facility they need.”

KZN SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, shared that the move would ease frustration. “Thousands of cases remain unfinalised to go to court. This will render smoother running of the forensics, with all units housed under one roof,” he said. He added that suggestions had been made to DPWI to repurpose unutilised and abandoned buildings around eThekwini to accommodate police work.
KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli said, “The new centralised laboratory would enhance the accuracy and speed of forensic analysis, support criminal investigations, help secure convictions of offenders, and protect innocent individuals from wrongful prosecution.”
This is an interim facility which is being rented by the DPWI, on behalf of SAPS, from the private sector. An amount of R1.3m will be spent monthly until September 2030.
