Locals padel to victory at national champs

Local pickleball (padel) players recently made their mark at the 3-day SA Open Pickleball Championship in Johannesburg.

Faced with steep competition, they managed to put Windsor Pickleball Club on the map. Janus Horn and Stacey scooped significant achievements as runners-up in their respective age divisions at the SA Open Pickleball Championship in Johannesburg recently.

The tournament attracted a record number of players from across South Africa and abroad, highlighting the rapid expansion of pickleball nationwide.

This year’s SA Open featured competitors across multiple divisions, including Open, +35, +50, Men’s, Ladies & Mixed Doubles, and Junior categories. KZN had a total of 10 players participating in the event, and they collectively returned home with five trophies and many second and third place finishes.

Boys U16 doubles winners were Shane Fouche and Dylan van Aswegen. The Ladies +50 singles winner was Michelle Kriese. In the 35+ doubles division Brad Arthur and Jason Pieters scooped the win.

The winners in the Mixed +50 Winners were Janus Horn and Tanya Bissett. And the Ladies +50 doubles title landed with Michelle Kriese and Tanya Bissett.

The winners of the Open Singles and Doubles titles as well as the +50 Singles and Doubles winners qualify to represent the SA team at the Pickleball World Cup in September in Vietnam where they expect 4000 participants from 80 countries.
