Senior citizens appeal for higher pension grants
Senior citizens have united in a call for higher pension grants, affordable healthcare and urgent relief from rising living costs.
A landmark gathering of senior citizens took place at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, and virtually, recently. It represented voices of the elderly across the country.
They appeal to the government to increase pension grants in line with the rising cost of living, to ensure affordable access to health care and chronic medication, to reduce the cost of electricity and basic services, and to implement credible measures to reduce cost of food, and essential goods.
“Our pension grants have not kept up with these increases. Many of us are now forced to make impossible choices, whether to buy food, pay for electricity or get medication to stay alive.”

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including veteran teachers, school principals, and esteemed community elders, all dedicated to organizing and spreading awareness within their respective communities.
“This assembly, signalled a profound evolution in the movement to secure dignity, security, and respect for the citizens who built this nation,” shared P.O.S.A.

Opening the session, community advocate and storyteller Cal’n Diva articulated the heart of the campaign through a powerful narrative of resilience.
“I stood in those historic spaces, feeling the literal physical manifestation of the exhaustion and isolation that so many of our elders feel right now,” she shared. “As an advocate, this pain reminded me of those trapped in invisible barracks of neglect, suffocated by a system that ignores them and leaves them in the dark.

“We take that heaviness and transform it into a bright, blinding yellow light of advocacy,” she stated. “We are the sun breaking through their isolation, celebrating the beautiful culture they spent their lives building. We will carry the yellow sun for them, we will fight for their dignity, and we will stand by their side, always.”
The senior citizens concluded that they worked and contributed to build South Africa, and they deserved dignity, respect, and living with security.
