Kavanagh storms to Durban SPAR Women’s 10km title
Race favourite Tayla Kavanagh lived up to expectations, claiming victory in the 2026 Durban SPAR Women's 10km Challenge in 31:31 ahead of Selam Gebre and Neheng Khatala.
RACE favourite Tayla Kavanagh has won the 2026 Durban SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge crossing the finish line at the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium in 31:31 this morning (June 28) and another win to the in Grand Prix race.
She was followed over the line by Selam Gebre (31:44) and Neheng Khatala in third position (32:08). The crowd of more than 12 000 runners was well led throughout the race with the first group, elite and the 10km runners, taking off at 08:00 and the 5km participants starting at 09:00.

With the sun shining bright over Durban, Kavanagh, Gebre, and Khatala were on fire as they led the crowd through fast and flat ‘out-and-back’ course. Delighted with hr performance Kavanagh said the competition was tight right up to the finish.

“The race went really well but the competition was tight between me and Selam,” said Kavanagh. “Coming into the end I thought let me just try it and worked out. With it being a home race, I am happy to have won today and what lies ahead for the rest of the season.”
The 25-year-old is already gearing up for her next race and representing the country at the XXIII Commonwealth Games are taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
