Matric 2026: Home Affairs extends hours for Smart ID applications
Home Affairs offices will close at 18:00 during the school holidays to help matric learners apply for Smart ID cards before the 2026 exams.
AS the 100-days countdown to the 2026 National Senior Certificates examinations begins today (July 6), the race is on to have all matric learners documented ahead of time.
The Department of Home Affairs has extended operational hours to accommodate expected increased demand for services due to the school holidays. Department spokesperson Thulani Mavuso said until July 21, Home Affairs offices throughout the country will be closing two hours later.
The offices will be open until 18:00, as opposed to the usual 16:00. “This is to assist learners and members of the public who wish to apply for and collect Smart ID Cards,” said Mavuso.
In a bid to fast-track the process of learners applying for their IDs, the department confirmed that as June of 203 bank branches now live through the department’s new digital partnership model with the banking sector.

“Over a quarter of a million people have already used this service to obtain a replacement Smart ID Card since it was launched on 9 March,” said Mavuso.
In addition, the department has launched an upgraded online booking system on the MyHomeAffairsOnline platform, introducing enhanced security measures to prevent the abuse of booking slots and improve access to services.
“The department continues to roll out interventions that seek to expand its services while ensuring that it delivers dignity for all.” said Mavuso.
Public schools closed for the June/July holidays on June 26 and will reopen for the third term on July 21.
