LGE 2026: Ward 27 candidate to put youth empowerment first
IFP Ward 27 councillor candidate Simphiwe Zondo, hopes to make youth empowerment a priority ahead of the Local Government Elections.
WITH the 2026 Local Government Elections just around the corner, councillors will be elected for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities across the country’s nine provinces.
This week, the Berea Mail took to the streets of Ward 27 to meet and greet councillor candidates competing for the hot seat come the November 4 Local Government Elections.
IFP ward 27 councillor candidate Simphiwe Zondo, 30, says that he will prioritise youth empowerment.
He holds a qualification in mechenical engineering, and has also worked at a garage, and as the chairperson of the SA Democratic Students Movement (SADESMO) during his tenure in college.

Zondo said that should he be successful in his councillor candidacy run, his priorities would be:
- To create job opportunities for those who are not in possession of any qualification and invest in projects that benefit them, such as having sewing machines.
- To assist students that are struggling academically, through the help of assigned tutors.
- A designated space for people to harness their talents and create job opportunities for themselves, eg a dance studio.
“Some people shy away from certain job opportunities because of their qualifications, and become dependent on the government. So I want to create opportunities that will allow the youth to be self sustainable without relying on the government for an income,” said Zondo.
