From firefighter to security extraordinaire

A former Durban firefighter has turned in his fire hose to serve the community in a different sphere - the security industry.

ISHAN Sahatu, the Director of Defence Dynamics, discovered his love and passion for the security industry after he was introduced to bodyguarding and club security by an associate in 2008. He was still working as a fireman at the time, but would dedicate his off days to learn all he could about this new found passion.

“I met with other security operators during this time and networked. My Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) registration and bodyguard training were the first two tickets under my belt,” added Sahatu.

While the dream of launching his own security company had blossomed this would only come into fruition in 2022 – after Sahatu spent time working at few different positions, both local and abroad. Security, however, only became his focus after he returned to South Africa.

Following the recent disasters that hit Durban particularly hard – the floods and looting – Sahatu identified a gap within the market, which he felt driven to fill.

“Our mission is resolute: to establish ourselves as Durban’s premier accredited security company.’ His aim he said was to become known as a “trusted partner” in safeguarding that which matters most to people.

“I love earning the trust of my clients by using my knowledge, skills and an excellent level of service to keep people and assets safe,” he said, adding that he finds his job both “thrilling and intense”.

Even as the Director Sahatu remains dedicated to providing a “hands on approach” to his business. “My customers are not just a number. I want to put my mark on everything I do. We share a genuine passion for protecting people and assets.”

Here are some of the services offered by Defence Dynamics:

  • Guarding
  • Close Quarter Protection
  • Asset Protection
  • Corporate Security Services
  • Emergency Preparedness

When asked how he thought his experience as a firefighter helped him in his current role he said, “By understanding risk on a life and death basis and thinking out of the box. By transferring skills knowledge and experience from emergency and disaster to what I do in security today”.
