Christopher Duigan set to perform popular classics at Durban Jewish Centre

Christopher Duigan will play popular classics with his iconic piano skills, making the show available for free to young musicians or aspiring artists of school-going age.

MAKING a welcome return to Friends of Music in Durban this November is pianist Christopher Duigan. For this performance, Duigan will play ‘20 Popular Classics’, an appealing programme that includes many of the most recognised and celebrated classical piano melodies from the repertoire. Duigan will include Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca, Manuel de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance, The Dazzling Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Debussy’s Clair de Lune and Chopin’s Polonaise Opus 53 Heroic. The showcase will take place on November 20 at 15:00 at the Durban Jewish Centre.

This concert is suitable for young and aspiring musicians, and free tickets are available to those of school-going age.

Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists, Christopher Duigan has been recognised as a South African piano icon and national musical treasure in South Africa. He has performed extensively with all leading South African orchestras in a repertoire of more than 25 works for piano and orchestra and over 100 performances. In recital, he has developed a popular following through his innovative presentation and programming of a broad and eclectic taste in music.

In 2010, he became one of only six pianists in South African history to be invited to be a ‘Steinway Artist’, joining an exclusive company of renowned international pianists.

Friends of Music is a non-profit organisation that was founded by Durban patron of the arts Dr Vera Dubin in 1983. For the past 37 years, the organisation has provided a platform for solo and chamber music artists to display their talents to Durban audiences. The very best of local, national and international performers have graced their stages and have provided world-class entertainment for discerning music lovers.
