Ongoing leak an eyesore in Morningside

A pool of water left from the leak is attracting mosquitoes to the area- this is among residents' gripes.

CONCERNS are streaming in over an ongoing water leak in Morningside. Residents say a host of problems have sprung up with the leak, which is on the corner of Milner and Avondale roads.

Working to address the issue is Noashaad Paddington, the building manger for Summer Glade, a housing complex situated on Avondale Road and bordering the leak. Paddington said the leak, which sprung up in mid-September, was fixed during the same month but sprung up again shortly thereafter. He has been trying to address the issue for the past six months.

Paddington said a pool of water has collected on the road as a result of the leak, which is trickling continuously. He added that members of the homeless community have been spotted washing their clothes and bathing in the run-off from the leak.

“Taxi drivers are also washing their vehicles in the water from the leak,” he said.

“The gutter is blocked, so the water stands still; it doesn’t flow anywhere. That’s why people are coming to wash here. It’s an eyesore for residents driving past and an eyesore for the building,” he said.

A sizeable pool is forming at the corner of Milner and Avondale roads.

Paddington added that the resultant pool of water is attracting mosquitoes to the area.

“There is a big problem with mosquitoes for residents who live on the ground floor near the leak. They said there are a lot more mosquitoes than usual,” he said.

Resident Jothi Cooppan echoed Paddington’s concerns, saying taxis were being washed on-site, and people were using the leak to wash their clothes. She added that litter was a growing concern in the area with the homeless sleeping in the open space opposite Summer Glade. Cooppan called for the eThekwini Municipality to address the issue.

“We try to maintain our building as best we can. We even take care of the pavement,” she said. “We pay our rates, and the least we expect from the Municipality is that they come here, have a look at what’s going on and rectify this mess,” concluded Cooppan.

The eThekwini Municipality did not send their comment at the time this article went to press.
