School devastated by flood, harbour polluted
Ward 33 councillor Sakhile Mngadi says there has been millions of rands worth of flood damage at Brettonwood High School, which had just recovered from the April 2022 floods.
BRETTONWOOD High School in Umbilo has been devastated after the heavy rains last night, Tuesday, June 27. The school, which flooded during the April and May floods of 2022, had just recovered, only to be hit again by inclement weather.
Ward 33 councillor Sakhile Mngadi, who visited the site today, reported waterlogged fields and flooded classrooms.

“The damage is catastrophic. The school recently recovered after the April and May floods last year. It’s devastating to see it in this state again. I estimate this will amount to millions of rands,” he said.

Adding to the devastation, on the other side of town, the Durban Harbour was flooded with a mass of plastic pollution and plant matter. This is an ongoing issue seen after heavy rains when debris and pollution wash downstream towards the coast – often leaving masses of litter in the harbour and along Durban beaches.
In a video circulating on social media, a substantial amount of debris is seen floating on top of the water.
Sean Watkins of Natal Power Boats said he took the video in the early morning. Watch the video here.
