SAPS track down armed robber in Umbilo
Umbilo SAPS arrested one suspect for armed robbery on Wednesday and several suspects on Saturday during a road block where they clamped down on unlicensed firearms, drugs and illegal alcohol sales in the area.
THE Umbilo SAPS Crime Prevention Unit arrested a suspect for attempted robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon on Sydney Road on Wednesday, July 12.
Spokesperson for Umbilo SAPS Captain Phumzile Makaula said police were called to the scene after an attempted robbery at about 13:45.
“According to the complainant, a man tried to rob him of his cellphone. The complainant managed to escape and called out for help. Umbilo Crime Prevention team arrived and patrolled the area with the complainant who pointed out the suspect to the police,” said Makaula.

The suspect was arrested, and police are investigating a case of attempted robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.
Umbilo SAPS have also clamped down on unlicensed firearms, drugs and illegal alcohol sales in the area. On Saturday, July 8, several suspects were arrested during a roadblock on the corner of Sydney and Che Guevara roads.
According to Makaula, a 32-year-old man was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while three more suspects were arrested for possession of drugs and one suspect was arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence.
