The Association for The Aged hosts combined sports day
Nine teams took part, representing the various Tafta homes, centres and clubs.
THE Addington Primary School grounds in South Beach, Durban, were a wave of colour as teams of senior citizens, full of energy and gusto, showed their vigour during The Association for The Aged (Tafta’s) combined sports day last Wednesday (4 October).
If ever there was an event that showed elders pursuing an active aging lifestyle, this was it – with nine different teams representing the various Tafta homes, centres and clubs. There was a friendly competitiveness as they challenged each other in various field events, all hoping to be the 2023 winning team.
Zany team mascots entertained the participants with singing, cheering and dancing, while team captains had their hands full, ensuring their members were ready to give it their all in their different sporting events. The final winner of this year’s sports day was the team of John Conradie House, Langeler Towers, Durban. Berea Mail is also positive that most of Durban heard they had won during their overly joyous war cry and lap of honour with their winning accolades.

Divisional manager of operations Yoshina Kistensamy expressed her admiration for the elders who participated in the day’s activities, saying, “As staff of Tafta, we become familiar with our residents, learning each of their strengths and capabilities. Their individual achievements and our organisational achievements become amalgamated as we celebrate milestones and journey through life together.
“It is heartwarming to see the growth, potential and vivacity that can be found in the golden years of life. We applaud those who embrace new pursuits and take an active-ageing approach to achieving goals. Well done to each participant,” said Kistensamy.
Tafta CEO Femada Shamam said it is important to recognise the power of uniting in purpose to achieve magnificent outcomes. “As we celebrate our 65th year, we continue to take much joy in the activities, events and programmes during the commemoration of older people this October. Our heartfelt thanks go to Avbob, Allmed, Saayman Danks Electroplating and Durban Maintenance and Building for their kind sponsorships. Their assistance has proven that we can achieve so much more by working together towards the common vision of an inclusive society supportive of older people,” said Shamam.

Established in 1958, Tafta provides care and support to over 1 500 older people in residential facilities (fit, assisted living and frail care), and a further 3 500 through outreach (social services, wellness activities, meals on wheels and home-based care programmes) at 24 service locations in the form of homes, clubs and wellness centres. While Tafta continues to provide this support, they pursue their purpose to make dignity, growth and meaningful life a realistic prospect for all elders.
