False reporting is a serious crime, says Berea SAPS captain

Berea SAPS Captain Poobalan Naidoo expressed his frustration over frequent false crime reports to the local station and warns residents that false reporting is a criminal offence.

CAPTAIN Poobalan Naidoo of the Berea SAPS said there has recently been an influx of false cases being reported to the police.

“Police are warning the public not to open false cases since a person reported a false case of ‘theft of motor vehicle’ at the Berea Police Station. The person has been charged with perjury and will be prosecuted. Reporting of false cases is not only a waste of time and resources but it is a criminal offence, and if caught, you will be charged. It is a serious matter to report a false case as the time and resources could be utilised for genuine cases,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo said there are already a great deal of property crimes that need the police’s attention. “Property crimes like ‘theft of motor vehicles’, ‘theft out of motor vehicles’ and housebreaking are opportunistic crimes, so let’s work together to reduce crime. Try not to be complacent and leave stuff visible and unattended. Lock all doors and windows when going out. Do not leave stuff visible in your vehicle. Try to park in well-lit areas. [These are] simple but significant practices. Together, we can win the war against crime,” said Naidoo.
