DHL Lifesaving South African Champs set to take place at Addington Beach

With the prestigious lifesaving competition, the DHL Lifesaving South African Champs, coming to Durban's shores, local lifesaving club Durban Surf Lifesaving club, hopes to make a splash at the upcoming event, which is set to take place from March 21 on their home turf.

THE DHL Lifesaving South African Champs celebrate the sport of lifesaving, recognising the effort and hard work of the lifeguards, and young lifeguards called Nippers, who have trained throughout the year to compete at the sport’s highest level. For the first time in many years, SA Champs will be taking place in Durban, and Durban Surf, South Africa’s first and oldest lifesaving club, will be giving its all to bring the titles back to a Durban-based lifesaving club.

According to Stacey Randall, a Durban Surf Committee member, the Durban Surf Lifesaving Club, as with other clubs, is a public benefit organisation (PBO) that relies on donations and sponsorships to keep the institution running. “The club is responsible for the safety of the bathing public at North Beach every weekend and during public holidays as well as the administrating of the duty squads. Durban Surf spends over 11 700 volunteer man-hours each year patrolling our beaches and keeping North Beach safe for local residents, visitors, tourists and beachgoers alike,” said Randall.

“The DHL Lifesaving South African Champs takes place from March 21 until March 27 and consists of pool and beach events for all ages, ranging from Nippers (aged 9–14), Juniors, Seniors and all the way to Masters with competitors up the age of 80 years old competing for the title. With the competition happening in Durban, Durban Surf Lifesaving Club now has the opportunity to bring a full contingency of competitors, across all age groups, to bring the trophy home,” said Randall.

It’s going to be an exciting few days right here at Durban’s Addington Beach, and spectators can come out to support the local team from Thursday, March 21 to Wednesday, March 27.
