WATCH: eThekwini Municipality tears down China Emporium building

Part of the China Emporium building was demolished this morning with the rest of the building green lit to be demolished soon.

THE China Emporium building in Durban Central Business District was extensively damaged by a fire in January 2022, and has become a public eyesore and safety hazard since the fire two years ago.

After a lengthy legal battle over the demolition of the building, the building is set to be demolished this week with the start of the demolition taking place this morning (Friday, April 26).

According to a statement released by the Municipality, a structural engineer’s report received days after the fire recommended that the entire building be demolished. “Due to non-action by the owners, the Municipality approached the court for the demolition of the building to be granted through a court order,” said the Municipality.

Owner of the building, Zoloscore Investments (Pty) Ltd was given six months to demolish the building but failed to do so, rendering them in breach of the court order.

The City was then tasked with the legal responsibility to demolish the building as the dilapidated building posed multiple challenges arising from the compromised structure. Issues such as illegal dumping, unsanctioned public use, the risk of structural collapse as the building was unstable, traffic congestion and business disruptions due to prolonged road closures, compelled the Municipality to act.

“After following the required supply chain management processes, a service provider, Atomic Demolishers has been appointed to demolish the building,” said the City.
