Elections 2024: First-time voter ready to make his mark

Among the 1.2 million new voters that have been added to the voters’ roll are several first-time voters like Isaac Narayanasami. He shares why his voice matters.

Why my vote matters

FOR Durban North resident Isaac Narayanasami, this year’s general elections are a possible solution to the water crisis. Addressing the spiralling crime rate, bringing down youth unemployment and fixing the city’s roads are priorities for him as a first-time voter.

As the country prepares for this year’s National and Provincial Elections, the 18-year-old is among 1.2 million new voters that have been added to the voters’ roll.

Of that number, 77% are young people under the age of 29 entering the voters’ roll for the first time.

While it is tough to make a determination of which political party will win this year’s elections, Narayanasami is determined to make his voice count.

“I want to make a difference and be part of much-needed change. I feel like things need to change in our province and country because there are so many problems, and in many ways, things seem to be getting worse. For young people everywhere, and first-time voters, I think you should vote if you are registered as it’s the only way to make your voices heard.

“For me, there are a number of issues I want to see change in. I want to live in a safer country, and our crime rate needs to be addressed. I would also hope for an end to the water crisis affecting north Durban. As a motorist, the state of our roads is also extremely concerning, and as a soon-to-be graduate, I’m fearful there may not be opportunities because of the high unemployment rate. Those are my motivations for voting this year,” he said.

With a number of political parties to choose from ahead of this year’s national elections, Narayanasami said he has already made up his mind.

“I’ve locked in my choice. I’ve read the party’s manifesto and compared it to others so that has made my choice easier,” he said.
