Massive sinkhole in Durban CBD closes busy roads

A massive sinkhole, as a result of a burst underground pipe, has formed on Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street in the Durban Central Business District. The City is has closed roads in the surrounding area and is warning road users to steer clear of the collapsed road.

THE eThekwini Municipality is warning motorists and road users to steer clear of a major sinkhole in Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street in the Durban Central Business District due to an underground water pipe burst.

The sinkhole is in the middle of the road in the intersection of Dr Yusuf Dadoo and Bertha Mkhize streets.

The following streets have been closed while plumbers work to repair the damaged pipe:

•Corner of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street and Bertha Mkhize Street

•Corner of David Webster Street towards the harbour.

According to a statement released by the Municipality, traffic has been diverted to alternative routes by Metro Police who are on site to ensure traffic management.

“Officials from the Water and Sanitation Department including plumbers are on site to isolate and repair the burst pipe. The Water and Sanitation Department will investigate the cause of the sinkhole and work around the clock until repairs are completed. Thereafter, repairs of the affected road where the sinkhole has developed will begin in the coming days,” said the Municipality.

The City said the Comrades Marathon routes are not affected by the major sinkhole.
