Join crime awareness day this Saturday
Attendees can expect a fun-filled and educational day focused on safety and security with numerous activities, including a flea market, kids' activities, demonstrations by security, police and fire departments, and school performances.
IF you’re looking for a fun, educational event that the whole family can enjoy, head to Port Natal School at 14 Dirk Uys Street for the Umbilo Community Policing Forum (CPF) Crime Awareness Fun Day this weekend on Saturday, June 15, from 09:00 to 14:00.
According to Umbilo CPF deputy chairperson, Maria Calitz, residents and visitors can expect a fun-filled and educational day focused on safety and security. “Residents can interact with the various security-related stakeholders. There will be a children’s dedicated spot with several planned activities and jumping castles.”
Calitz is also the co-organiser for the event and says she has been immensely assisted by Calvin Thomas, the chairperson of the Umbilo CPF, and Douglas Mellish, the public relations officer for this event. “The organisations involved in this initiative are: Umbilo CPF, SAPS, Community Safety and Liaison, Metro Police, Ongoti Risk Management Services and Security Companies,” said Calitz.

“There will be a flea market with over 35 stallholders selling food, books, plants, toys, Father’s Day gifts, clothes, jewellery, etc. The Drum Majorettes from DGHS will do a demo, and Penzance School and Holy Family College will also entertain us on the day. We have dog shows, fashion shows, a fitness demo and a demo by the fire department. The security companies will also put on an anti-hijacking demo for the crowds. We have a helicopter, which will be landing on the field, and other security vehicles,” said Calitz.

The Umbilo CPF will be selling boerewors rolls to raise money for the patrollers’ safety items. “We also have a raffle with excellent prizes to be won – the tickets cost R20. If anyone is interested in buying a ticket, they can contact Helen on 073 554 4276 or they can contact me on 083 790 2072,” said Calitz.
