Matriculants warned against disruptive ‘Pens Down’ parties
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is calling for responsible end-of-matric celebrations, and matriculants are also urged to donate their uniforms instead of destroying them.
AS the Class of 2024 nears the end of their high school career, caution has been urged by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education (KZN DoE) which has warned against ‘alarming and disruptive’ Pens Down parties that often follow the conclusion of the Grade 12 examinations.
“While we commend our learners for completing this critical chapter of their academic journey, we cannot condone activities that place them and others at risk,” said KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka.
In previous years, learners have been involved in dangerous, destructive and sometimes violent parties to mark the end of the National Senior Certificate exams. These activities, which include public drinking, vandalism and inappropriate behaviour, such as tearing and writing on school uniforms, undermine the values of respect and responsibility we strive to instil in our learners.

“We encourage parents, guardians and communities to work together with schools to prevent risky ‘Pens Down’ events. Learners should remember that their actions not only impact themselves but also reflect on their schools and families,” said department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi.
“The department acknowledges that for many, the completion of examinations marks a significant milestone. However, we urge learners to celebrate this achievement responsibly, in a manner that reflects dignity and respect for themselves, their peers and their communities.”
The department encourages matriculants to donate their school uniforms in gift packs to needy learners when they come in to collect their Statement of Results on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. “Let us prioritise safety, respect for property, and the well-being of our communities during this time,” said Hlomuka.
