Another foetus discovered on roadside on Montpellier Road
Incidents of fetus dumping keep occuring in the Durban area, following the discovery of another on Montpelier Road this morning. Experts caution would-be mothers on options available to avoid such incidents.
JUST after 6:00 this morning ALS Paramedics responded to a dumped fetus in Montpellier Road in Morningside.
Garreth Jamieson of ALS described the scene. “Paramedics arrived on the scene to find SAPS and Security Officials in attendance. Paramedics found a plastic packet with a fetus in it which was left on the roadside. Unfortunately, the fetus was declared deceased on the scene.”
This is the second foetus found dumped in less than a month following one discovered in a rubbish bin in Glenwood three weeks ago.

According to the Law For All organisation, “With a reported 3 500 unwanted babies deserted every year, it’s safe to say that child abandonment and foetus dumping in South Africa is an epidemic. While it is illegal, there are various reasons that parents abandon their children. According to the Department of Social Development, the primary reasons include financial issues, lack of family support, unwanted pregnancy, resentment of the baby and fear of judgement from family members.
“Alternate options for people who don’t want their children, if finances are the primary concern, are applying for a child support grant which could alleviate some of the pressure or alternatively, contacting a social worker. They can help with placing the child in foster care or adoption programmes. If that’s not possible, the social worker can also assist with placing the child in a youth care centre.”
At this stage, the events leading up to this horrific incident are unknown, however Berea SAPS was investigating further.
