The South African government extended the registration deadline for spaza shops and food handling outlets to February, 28, 2025. President Cyril Ramaphosa originally set a 21-day deadline for registration, which ended on December 17, 2024.

According to the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Velenkosi Hlabisa, the extension was granted in response to concerns from spaza shop owners who requested more time to comply. “The registration is part of a broader strategy to address foodborne illness, which has been a concern in communities across the country. The government is committed to improving public health standards and ensuring food safety,” said Hlabisa in a statement.
