Suspect fatally shot by police in Morningside

A suspect in his 30s was killed this morning on Lillian Ngoyi Road after he allegedly attempted to shoot at the police who returned fire, fatally wounding him.

AN investigation is underway following the fatal shooting of a suspect on Lillian Ngoyi Road in Morningside this morning.

It is alleged that the deceased opened fire on a police officer who responded by shooting back at the suspect, fatally wounding him. According to Kyle van Reenen of Ensure Security, the shooting incident took place around 09:00. He said, “On arrival on scene a male aged in his 30s was found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival of ALS Paramedics.

“Reports from the scene are that a suspect attempted to shoot a police officer, who fired shots in defence, killing the man. The scene will be investigated further by the South African Police Service.”

Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics said they responded to the scene after receiving multiple calls for assistance following the shooting incident. He said initial reports indicated that an alleged suspect was in a critical condition near Argyle Road.

“Paramedics arrived on scene to find the SAPS already in attendance with the area cordoned off. Paramedics found the male to be in his 30s and had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his body. There was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased at the scene. The police officer had sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene,” said Jamieson. He added that the circumstances leading to the shooting are unknown and that SAPS will be investigating the matter further.
