This week’s events calendar features a vibrant mix of experiences, from a soulful music concert and a captivating animation festival to meaningful Mandela Day initiatives that invite the community to give back.
Musical drama
A contemporary musical dance drama, Esokuqala, which uses music, dance and drama to tell a pertinent story of the new South Africa: the spiritual conflict between the old world and the new, does a stop a the Playhouse Drama Theatre on Saturday, July 19 at 18:00. The musical highlights the dilemma which many face: As a generation of young adults living pretty much completely in the city, with all of the trappings of suburbia, how do we still authentically honour our culture and respect our past? Esokuqala unpacks this complex issue. Tickets cost R100 and are available through Webtickets.
Rock n Roll
Northlands Bowling Club, in association with The Rhumbelow Theatre, presents Rock Across America with Barry Thomson & The Reals – Dawn Selby, Robz Millar, Mali Sewell and Shaun Dragt. The show takes place on Saturday, July 19 at 19:30. The show celebrates America’s top rock hits, including the artistes who developed the style of Heartland Rock in the 1970s. The genre is exemplified by singer-songwriters Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Little Feat. Tickets are R200 and can be booked via Webtickets.

Mandela Day
In celebration of Mandela Day and the spirit of collective action, Oceans Mall is thrilled to announce its Oceans for Oceans Beach Clean-Up, happening on Friday, July 18 from 08:00 to 10:00.
The initiative invites residents, schools, and businesses to dedicate 67 minutes toward protecting and revitalising the coastline. Clean-up gloves and water will be provided. Volunteers will also be provided with clean-up kits and bags. Register on www.oceansmallumhlanga.co.za/register.

Durban North residents are preparing to roll up their sleeves this Mandela Day when the Collective Durban North Association launches its ambitious “67 Minutes for Durban North” initiative, aimed at cleaning and beautifying public spaces while strengthening community ties.
The initiative on Friday, July 18, will see volunteers gather at Whynotte Park and Rinaldo Park, which will serve as base stations for activities stretching into surrounding streets and green spaces. Registration closes on Wednesday, July 16. Residents can sign up via the dedicated Mandela Day WhatsApp number at 065 500 9966.
Holiday fun
Westown Square invites the little ones to the Little Brushes event at the shopping centre on Friday, July 18 from 11:00. The event is the kiddies version of a sip and paint, just messier.
Animation festival
The first ever Cape Town International Animation Festival takes place at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo on July 19 from 18.00. The first 30 guests get a free burger. The evening entails food, drinks and networking. Fancy Horse Studios will present their latest project, a seven-minute, seamless 3D animation created for a museum in Graaff-Reinet, followed by an hour of African animated short films showcasing the rich storytelling and talent from across the continent.
