Another fire claims two lives at Kennedy Road informal settlement
Kennedy Road informal settlement has suffered yet another tragic fire this weekend, this time claiming two lives and devastation that saw dwellers displaced.
ETHEKWINI Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services, alongside Disaster Management teams, responded to a devastating fire that broke out at midnight on Saturday at the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in Ward 25. This is not the first fire incident in the area since the beginning of winter.
The inferno reportedly tore through the densely populated area, destroying approximately 100 informal structures and displacing over 150 residents, including children.

“Tragically, two lives were lost, which is a middle-aged woman and an 18-month-old toddler, both suffering fatal third-degree burns. No further injuries have been reported at this time. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have originated from open flames, possibly due to an unattended stove,” shared Gugu Sisilana, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson.
Humanitarian aid is being offered, with NPO Gift of the Givers providing food, blankets, and essential items to affected residents.

“Many displaced families have found temporary shelter with neighbours, relatives, and friends. Disaster management teams are currently engaged in efforts to restore water and electricity services that have been disrupted by this incident,” said Sisilana.
In the wake of the inferno, eThekwini Deputy Mayor Zandile Myeni visited the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement to assess the damage. During her visit, Myeni provided essential relief items, including food parcels, blankets, and sponges to the affected victims.
The Deputy Mayor also appealed to the public for donations that could provide comfort to those affected.
