Major SAPS sweep nets wanted criminals

Women in blue recently took the lead in a major crime-fighting operation across Durban which yielded good results with over 315 traffic fines issued, drug busts, and arrests of wanted suspects nabbed under Operation Basadi.

A JOINT operation led by eThekwini District SAPS resulted in over 315 traffic fines being issued and five undocumented foreigners being detained in a large-scale crackdown which formed part of Operation Basadi.

According to Captain Carmen Rhynes, spokesperson for SAPS eThekwini District, the operation was carried out in collaboration with the eThekwini Metropolitan Police, Road and Traffic Department, and the Department of Home Affairs – Immigration. It was aimed at tackling crime while celebrating Women’s Month.

The initiative, spearheaded by eThekwini District Commissioner Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, targeted gender-based violence, illegal immigration, and general lawlessness through roadblocks and stop-and-search activities.

“The team set up Visible Crime Prevention static points across various locations in and around Durban,” said Rhynes. “Over 547 vehicles and 1000 people were searched, resulting in 315 traffic fines, five undocumented foreigners arrested, drug-related arrests, and the closure of illegal shebeens. Twelve suspects wanted for crimes against women and children were also apprehended.”

Operation Basadi marked the SAPS’ official close to Women’s Month, with a strong message: Women in law enforcement are not just symbolic — they’re on the frontlines, making a difference. Kheswa highlighted the significance of women in law enforcement leading the charge.

“This operation showcased the strength and unity of women in blue. I am proud of the role they played in keeping our communities safe,” she said.
