Berea SAPS warns shoppers as ‘drop money’ scam cases surge

Berea SAPS reports a spike in ‘drop money’ scams, urging shoppers to stay alert as criminals target victims during the festive season.

According to Berea SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Nokuthula Dlamini, the months of October and November have recorded a total of five cases involving the ‘drop money’ crimes, the highest seen in such a short span.

“A typical scenario is when a person would spot a thick bundle of something that would look like money notes on the ground, once he/she picks it up, individuals who pretend to be police officers in plain clothes would lure the victim, pretending to be going to the nearest police station, but they end up assaulting and robbing them of all their belongings, then dump them far,” Dlamini explained.

In some cases, she said, “Criminals deliberately drop money in public areas, then pretend to follow someone who ‘found’ the money. They convince victims to share the money and follow them outside, where accomplices wait to rob them.”

Shoppers are warned to never pick up dropped money or get involved with strangers. “Avoid following anyone trying to convince you to share money and stick to well-lit, populated areas. If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to the authorities immediately.”

The scam typically involves several perpetrators working as a team. “Most likely targets are individuals who have just withdrawn money from a bank or ATM.”

Dlamini warns shoppers to stay vigilant, especially as shopping activities increase during the festive season.
