Fraud-fighting Berea SAPS officer released on bail for corruption
A Berea SAPS detective faces corruption charges after an IPID sting operation allegedly caught him soliciting bribes to stop an arrest.
FOLLOWING a sting operation a Berea SAPS police officer was arrested last week by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). He was released on R2500 bail after a brief appearance in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
Sergeant Marcel Dorasamy, the man under the dark cloud, specialises in fraud and corruption cases at Berea Detectives Unit. He has 12 years of service in SAPS, underwent a fraud course within SAPS, and also holds a BA degree in Criminology. He is also an LLB candidate.
After cracking a fraud syndicate case last year, the management of the station praised him. “Dorasamy committed himself to unravel a deeper and more serious crime. Due to his tenacious commitment to ensuring that justice is done, he managed to get to the bottom of a more serious crime.”
IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping shared, “The arrest followed a complaint from a member of the public, who alleged that the officer demanded her to pay R4 000 in exchange for ensuring that her son is not arrested. The complaint further alleged that Sergeant Dorasamy demanded an additional R5 000 for the docket to be closed. The complainant then informed the accused officer that she could only afford an amount of R2500 at the time, and will pay the remainder of the balance the following month.
“The complainant then lodged a complaint with IPID, who sought and obtained an approval from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to conduct an undercover operation. Sergeant Dorasamy was then arrested when he arrived at the agreed location in Phoenix to collect the R2500 as promised.”
He appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s court on Wednesday and his case is postponed to February 11, 2026.
