Residents urged to reduce water use amid dam valve damage

Residents and businesses in eThekwini Municipality are urged to use water sparingly while repairs are underway.

On Wednesday (March 11) eThekwini Municipality’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), reported that a valve at Nagle Dam was damaged. The damage to the valve has resulted in a significant reduction in the amount of raw water reaching the treatment works.

This incident has affected the supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, which provides treated water to several areas across the City in both the northern and southern regions.

According to UUW, “The site of the valve, which was damaged, has now been isolated to allow repair operations to proceed safely. A diving team is currently on site and has begun the process of removing the damaged valve from the intake structure. This is a complex and carefully coordinated underwater operation that requires adherence to strict safety protocols.”

The Spokesperson for UUW, Siyabonga Maphumulo, added, “Once the damaged valve has been successfully removed, it will be taken off-site for repairs. In the meantime, we are implementing alternate operational plans to restore the full supply of raw water to the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works.”

He sad that further updates would be provided as progress is made on the repair work.  No timeframe for completion of work, and restoration of normal water supply has been provided.
