Unsung hero keeps Musgrave sidewalks spotless
Musgrave community rallies behind Welcome Nzama, turning his daily clean-up efforts into a sustainable job and inspiring local pride.
When he landed in Durban from his hometown in Bergville, his mission was to search for work. While walking along Musgrave and Silverton Roads, he was spotted on occasion picking up litter and depositing it in the bin outside a local cafe.
Since then, Welcome “Zakhele” Nzama has become a household name. Ahmed Paruk, chairperson of the Musgrave Ratepayers’ Association (MRPA), shared, “His small, daily acts of care caught the attention of nearby residents and community groups. Residents approached the MRPA about formally supporting Zakhele by hiring him as a daily sweeper.

“The MRPA originally agreed to provide him a modest monthly stipend funded by subscription fees, but because the MRPA stepped aside following an internal promotion to the UIP, rather than leaving him without support, several local organisations and neighbours stepped in,” said Paruk.
“Musjidus Salaam Musgrave, local schools, Ranger Security, and members of MRPA, and several residents launched a grassroots initiative to ensure Welcome’s family would be supported. They began pooling donations and contributions to create a regular monthly wage for him. In addition to monetary support, community members have offered tools, protective gear, and morning check-ins to co-ordinate his work around the schools and nearby streets.

“Welcome’s presence has already made a measurable difference. His consistent care of the sidewalks and school entrances has improved the cleanliness and overall kerb appeal of the area, and his friendly interaction with pupils and locals has strengthened community bonds. Neighbours say his diligence has inspired others to take more pride in their surroundings and to contribute small but meaningful efforts to keep the neighbourhood clean,” added Paruk.
The initiative supporting Nzama demonstrates a practical, compassionate approach to grassroots social support — turning simple daily actions into a sustainable livelihood and a source of community pride.
