Transport Department exposes driver’s licence fraud syndicates

KZN Transport exposes alleged driver’s licence fraud syndicate with leaked recording, sparking legal and ethical concerns.

The KZN Department of Transport has released a dramatic recording it says reveals one of the province’s biggest driver’s licence fraud syndicates.

The recording, shared in isiZulu on the department’s Facebook page under Operation Nenzani LaEzweni, captures a conversation between a learner and a syndicate member.

In it, the learner expresses concern after being arrested, while the syndicate member reassures them: “Ungakhathazeki, sizokwenza ukuthi uthole elinye ithuba lokuhlolwa.” (“Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you get another chance to do the test”).

Another voice is heard promising to “push the process through” despite the arrest, suggesting the syndicate had ways to manipulate outcomes at the Mkondeni Testing Centre.

The bust followed the arrest of a learner and a private driving school instructor, which the Department says has given them access to the “corruption playbook”. MEC Siboniso Duma’s revived Transport and Traffic Inspection Unit claims it will “shred” the playbook once all syndicate members are arrested.

While the Facebook post has attracted thousands of likes and comments, the department’s approach raises questions about professionalism and legality. Broadcasting recordings of suspects before trial could compromise due process and privacy rights.

Legal experts warn that such public exposure may open the department to defamation claims. Community members are divided: some applaud the transparency, while others argue the posts humiliate individuals and turn serious enforcement into entertainment.

The Department was contacted for comment but did not respond by the time of publication, and promised a full statement from Duma later this week.
