March-And-March takes on filth in Durban streets
Armed with brooms and garbage bags, members of March-And-March and civilians embarked on a different campaign, cleaning the CBD.
THE once-pristine Bertha Mkhize Street (Victoria Street) is labelled as one of the filthiest streets in the CBD, with a majority of foreign-owned shops and street vendors. This motivated the anti-illegal immigrants group March-And-March to intervene.
Some shop owners and vendors were seen locking up and packing up as the movement approached. There were moments of clashes between the two parties; however, the heavy police presence seemed to deter any ambitions of collision.
Lindani Xulu, a March-And-March member, said they decided to start the cleanup on this particular street because it is “one of the most problematic” areas.
“We grew up in Durban, and it was nothing like it is today. It used to be beautiful and clean. The traders around here do not comply with the bylaws. They wrap up their day and leave litter lying around, without discarding it properly.”

He added that the cleanup will run for as long as the city remains dirty. “There will be regular monitoring, and once we are satisfied with the state of the streets, we shall cease this particular campaign” Xulu said.
Mach-And-March called on more citizens to heed the call and return Durban streets to its former glory.
@caxtonlocalmedia The March And March movement is embarking on a week-long clean-up campaign, targeting the CBD. Today, the group started on Bertha Mkhize Street (Victoria), considered to be the filthiest in the CBD due to overcrowding vendors and shops. #bereamail #marchandmarch #durban ♬ Gaspol ndangak2 – 𝙃𝙊𝙍𝙀𝙂𝙂𝘼𝙉𝙆
