DHS marks 160 years of history with memorable Founders Day
DHS celebrated its 160th anniversary with a Founders Day featuring fierce sporting rivalries, school pride and a strong Old Boys presence.
DURBAN High School roared with excitement on Saturday as they celebrated Founders Day with a spectacular display of action from the Old Boys and the current student body.
Old Boys from across SA returned to the hallowed grounds of DHS for a day filled with brotherhood, pride, and tradition to mark the 160th anniversary of the school. United by the badge they once wore and the values it represents, they basked in the glory of DHS.
To mark the momentous occasion and to celebrate the milestone, DHS was visited by Westville Boys’ High School, whose presence added a healthy dose of rivalry and raised the standard of competition across the day.

The two schools contested gripping fixtures in hockey and rugby, delivering a level of sport that had the crowd firmly on their feet. The school management said Founders Day always brings out the crowds and the competitive spirit.

“The hockey was a technical spectacle of end-to-end play, while the rugby was physical, structured, and fiercely competitive from the first whistle to the last,” said the school management.
With main celebrations centred around Founders Day, Old Boys who had not shared the same corridors in decades stood shoulder to shoulder on the touchline, their voices rising in school songs and war cries that echoed across the fields as they have done since DHS first opened its doors in 1866.

“The current boys of the school repaid that loyalty in full, competing with the courage, commitment, and pride that the Old Boys themselves once embodied.”
Management emphasised that DHS does not merely produce boys, but produces brothers. “Westville Boys’ High School were gracious and worthy opponents, and DHS extends its sincere thanks for the quality and spirit they brought to the occasion.”
