280 homes sought for eThekwini-backed smart solar pilot
The Project Smart Solar pilot will equip selected households with advanced energy management systems and ongoing support at no cost.
AN opportunity has opened up for eThekwini residents to be part of an innovative smart energy pilot project which will see 280 homes, with access to Wi-Fi, being connected to a cheaper source of power.
The eThekwini-backed Project Smart Solar is run by Plentify, a South African energy tech company, and supported by international development partners, including the Agence Française de Development, the European Union, and the EU Delegation to SA.
eThekwini energy efficiency manager Sindile Buthelezi said the project is designed to help homes use energy more intelligently, support grid resilience, and contribute to a stronger, greener city. She encouraged residents to be part of the pilot.
“Project Smart Solar is an important step in exploring how households can become part of a more resilient energy future for eThekwini.”

Applications are now open and close at the end of August for Project Smart Solar. The City encouraged homes with solar and battery systems to apply as they may qualify if they have: an electric geyser, solar PV panels, battery storage, a compatible inverter system and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity.
“Households without solar also qualify if they have an electric geyser and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity.”
The pilot project is being hailed for bringing smart energy and skills to the city. Tumisang Kalagobe, Project Smart Solar Lead at Plentify, said young people will be upskilled by Plentify’s professional installation team and employed to support installations where possible.
“Selected participants will receive the Plentify Home Energy Management System, which includes SolarBot and/or HotBot devices and access to the Plentify Home App. Professional installation and ongoing support will also be provided at no cost throughout the pilot.”
