ETHEKWINI Municipality has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to theft and misconduct after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed contract workers interfering with goods belonging to a delivery driver while on duty.

Municipality spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the City is taking these allegations seriously and has launched an internal investigation into the incident.

“The Municipality views the allegations in a serious light and condemns all acts of criminality,” said Mzila. “Conduct of this nature would be wholly unacceptable and does not reflect the values, ethics and standards expected of those working on behalf of the City.”

The workers seen in the video were reportedly deployed to carry out electricity repairs when the alleged incident occurred. Mzila said the allegations were particularly concerning because, if proven true, they would represent a serious breach of public trust.

“The allegations are of particular concern as the individuals in the video were reportedly deployed to carry out electricity repairs. If substantiated, any departure from assigned duties to engage in criminal conduct would represent a serious breach of public trust and would undermine the City’s commitment to professional service delivery,” he said.

The Municipality has launched an internal investigation to establish the facts and said it would co-operate fully with law enforcement should a criminal case be opened.

“Appropriate action will be taken against any individual found to have engaged in unlawful or unethical conduct, in terms of the applicable contractual and disciplinary processes,” Mzila said.

He added, “The City assures residents that it maintains a zero-tolerance approach to theft, corruption and misconduct, and to any behaviour that undermines public confidence in municipal service delivery.”
