A DESPERATE rescue effort at Durban’s South Beach ended in tragedy on Thursday afternoon when a man believed to be in his 60s died after being pulled from the ocean.

ALS Paramedics responded to multiple calls about a drowning incident at the beach in the Durban CBD at around 13:00.

On arrival, paramedics found Metro Police Search and Rescue and lifeguards performing CPR on the man after he had been pulled from the water.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the man was found in cardiac arrest and that efforts to save his life continued for an extended period.

“It is alleged that the lifeguards pulled the man from the ocean and found him to be in a state of cardiac arrest. Immediately CPR was started and taken over by Advanced Life Support Paramedics. Despite a lengthy resuscitation effort unfortunately the man passed away on the scene.”

The man was declared dead at the scene after paramedics were unable to revive him. Jamieson said police were at the scene and would investigate the incident.

“At this stage the exact events leading up to the incident are unknown, however SAPS and Metro Police were in attendance and will be investigating further.”
