Tourist gems under spotlight to drive Durban’s economic plan
On the agenda was the proposed World Trade Centre Durban, an initiative aimed at establishing a dedicated hub to attract international trade.
Two of Durban’s major tourism, job creation, and investment boosters, Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) and uShaka Marine World, were a point of interest during a recent strategic meeting.
The meeting was chaired by City Manager Musa Mbhele and attended by executive leadership of both entities.
“The meeting was convened to fast-track the resolution of outstanding operational matters and to align both municipal entities with the City’s economic development and inner-city regeneration priorities,” said the City’s spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila.
uShaka Marine World is an anchor development within the Point Waterfront precinct. It attracts domestic and international visitors who support local hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses, and the Durban ICC positions itself as the leading destination for local and international events.

“A central item on the agenda was the proposed World Trade Centre Durban (WTCD). The initiative is intended to establish a dedicated office footprint to attract international trade, commerce and investment to the City.
“The meeting also considered the proposed acquisition of the Smart Xchange building to house the WTCD and the proposed closure of Walnut Road to create an integrated precinct,” Mzila said.
Both proposals remain subject to municipal approval and public participation processes.
