Reduce your winter electricity bill indoors and outdoors
Space Heaters
Invest in an oil heater with a thermostat and an output no bigger than 2,000 watts if you need heat for up to three hours in the same room; it heats the room slowly and steadily over the three-hour period and does not cause a spike in your electricity bill.
If you require heat for eight hours or longer in the same room, a heater with a thermostat and an output no bigger than 1,000W (lowest setting) will do the energy efficiency trick, gradually raising the temperature to the optimal level of thermal comfort over time without burning a hole in your pocket.
Seal any gaps around windows and draught-proof your home in preparation for winter this will ensure that the energy you use heating your home is not wasted by heat being lost outside.
Outdoor Energy Saving
Make regular pool maintenance a priority by limiting filtering to once every 24 hours during winter – it could contribute to notable savings on the energy required to run your pool pump.
Buy a pool cover and use it during winter and periods when your pool is not used frequently – it will limit water loss and reduce the amount of time your pool pump needs to run to keep the water clean.
Install motion sensors on outside lights so they light up when they are needed and don’t use electricity the rest of the night, motion sensors also have an added security feature to them making your home less inviting to potential intruders.
