Men’s tennis aces title

Berea Tennis Club has retained the A Shield title after beating Westville.

BEREA Tennis Club retained the men’s A Shield title when they defeated Westville Tennis Club 3-1 in the final played at Westville.

In the singles matches, Costa Skopelitis beat Peseka Motsamai 6-1 6-3 to give Berea an early lead before Westville’s Moosa Mpondi defeated Andrew Narramore 6-3 6-3 to square the rubber up at 1-1.

In the final singles rubber, Berea’s Aaron Koopman had a hard fought win over Lindsay North, winning in three hard fought sets 7-5 5-7 6-3. The win gave Berea a crucial 2-1 lead going into the all important doubles.

With Berea needing to win just one of the remaining two doubles rubbers, Koopman and Narramore were too good for Phillip North and Motsamai winning in straight sets 7-6 6-3 and thus giving Berea their second straight victory in the men’s A Shield. With a result already achieved the final doubles rubber between Berea’s Janus Horn and Shopelitis and Westville’s Lindsay North and Mpondi was halted at one set apiece.

Berea’s 2nd men’s team were also crowned champions when they defeated Zululand to win the men’s B Shield and earn promotion to the A Shield for 2014.
