THE December long weekend, 14 December to 16 December, sees the fast, zippy yachts of Durban gearing up for the Flying Fifteen, Cats and Dinghy Regatta to be competed offshore of Durban.
The three day affair hosted by the Royal Natal Yacht Club will have a number of classes compete in races around the cans. The Race Officer will set a variety of courses for the smaller yachts to dash around, testing their skills and ability in short and long haul dinghy racing.
“Last year we had a large fleet of Hunters and Flying Fifteens compete in the regatta with sailors coming from around the country to race. This year we decided to open up the classes to give everyone an opportunity to race offshore. Most of the dinghy racing takes place in the safety of the harbour so sailors will enjoy the challenge of being out in the big blue.” Rear Commodore for the Royal Natal Yacht Club Rob Samways said.
The dinghy racing promises to be adrenalin pumping as a competitive fleet including Flying Fifteen defending champions, Patrick Harris and Jeremy Kriek, and top Hobie and 505 sailors vying for some action offshore.
