Varsity Shield rugby kicks off in Durban
Fort Hare’s tenacious defence held firm taking the team to a win against UKZN.
IT was Monday 3 February, but this was no ordinary campus Monday night at Howard College, it was the first time that Varsity Shield rugby was hosted in Durban and months of planning and organising created a memorable event for students, alumni and supporters.
The UKZN Impi played the University of Fort Hare and a bumper crowd of more than 3000 arrived to cheer on their teams.
Lwazi Ngcungama’s Impi started well and raced to a 10-0 lead, but Fort Hare came back and the teams were level 12-all at the break. The second half was tight as the Impi put pressure on the visitors. However, the unthinkable happened when Fort Hare’s tenacious defence held firm and they scored a breakaway try 6 minutes from time to steal victory from the home side.
Result aside, the evening was fantastic with mascots, food stalls, music, a beer tent and beer-pong tournaments adding to the student vibe.
The next match at Howard College is on 3 March against University of Western Cape and it promises to be bigger and bigger.
