Quins lose challenge league match
The Hillary Malvern team was too strong for Umbilo Harlequins.
UMBILO Harlequins Cricket Club played a full round of fixtures on Sunday 9 February.
The first team took on Hillary Malvern in a 50 over a side stream one Challenge League match at Peace Park Malvern.
Quins lost the toss and fielded first. Fast bowler Kevin Kettle had both openers dismissed leg before wicket and clean bowled in the third over, at which juncture Hillary Malvern were 16 runs for two wickets.
However, a defiant innings of 72 runs by Jason Raath at the number three position, a gutsy stay of 28 runs by Ryan Schait at number four and a nonchalant knock of 52 runs by Kevin Bauerschmidt took Hillary Malvern to a commendable total of 238 runs being all out in the 50th over.
A great spell of seven overs of medium paced seamers by Andrew De Beer in which he took three middle order wickets for 30 runs and Kevin Kettle who took three wickets for 50 runs were the only noteworthy contributions by the Quins attack which was otherwise an overall poor effort besides some athletic wicket keeping by Tyrelle Smith.
Quins’ Kevin Kettle dug in with 18 runs including three boundaries, but the upper middle order again failed to provide any contribution, until Andrew De Beer and Kalvin Venter at numbers six and seven added 14 runs each to the total. Number 10 batsman Tyrelle Smith top scored with 22 runs but unfortunately ran out the in-form Andre Viljoen with the same score and finally a flamboyant yet refreshing innings of 14 runs by Sylvester Sauli at the jack position.
Quins were dismissed 60 runs shy of Hillary Malvern’s tally with five full overs to spare.
