Karateka excel at international tourney

SHOTOKAN Karate-do International of South Africa (SKISA) held a successful International Kanazawa Cup (IKC) karate tournament at the Fred Crookes Sports Hall in Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently.

SKISA Morningside excelled at the tournament where karateka brought back several medals to their dojo. Sensei Tina Lee 4th Dan SKIF-Japan, Morningside dojo instructor was extremely proud of all students that participated. Grand champions Divashini Naidoo (13) and Kasey Pillay (10) were the outstanding competitors at the tournament attaining gold medals for kata and kumite in their respective divisions. Divashini Naidoo was the grand champion in 2013 as well.

Trisha Singh (30) who recently joined the SKISA Morningside Dojo, won gold for kumite and bronze for kata.

Kyoshi Sonny Pillay, President of Karate South Africa (KSA) and SKISA congratulated SKISA Morningside Karateka.

“It is due to all our participants, the support from parents, officials and instructors that our tournament was a roaring success, SKISA salutes you,” said Pillay.

Sensei Brando Pillay, (5th Dan SKIF-Japan) recently appointed as Head Karate Coach for Protea Team (Cadets and Children) and IKC tournament director, said: “I was very impressed by the technical level and sportsmanship shown by the athletes at the tournament and I congratulate all Morningside karateka, watching the female athletes reign supreme at the event bodes well and serves as an inspiration for our youth, especially females in society.”
