Canoeists head for world champs
A Glenwood High School old boy is heading to Hungary to take part in the U23 World Championships in canoeing.
GLENWOOD old boy, Calven Clack, and his canoeing partner, Cameron Hudson, have been selected to represent South Africa at the U23 world championships from 20 to 26 July in Szged, Hungary.
The canoeing duo has been selected for the K2 – 200m sprint canoeing event. Calven and Cameron had a qualifying time of 34:5 seconds at the SA championships which they hope to shave down to 33 seconds after some time in the boat.
Calven shared some details about the training and dedication a sport like sprint canoeing takes: “The 200m sprint is a very technical race that involves a great deal of strength. The race is likened to the 100m athletics sprint. One minor mis-stroke or slip up can change a race result. A good start is therefore very important.”
He said mental preparation was equally as important as the physical. Calven’s weekly training programme includes four sessions on the water, either at the harbour or Shongweni Dam, and four sessions in the gym, monitored by dedicated coach Neil Evans.
Calven is a student at Varsity College Westville, and is currently studying a Diploma in Sports Management and Development.
