Youth celebrated at hockey festival

Youth in Durban will be celebrated again at the annual Spur Riverside Festival.

FLEDGLING hockey enthusiasts are in for a treat as the biggest mini hockey festival in South Africa, the annual Spur Riverside Festival, takes place on 16 June at KZN’s Riverside Hockey Club.

All hockey fanatics between nine and 13 years of age will gather to take part in a day of family fun and pure hockey enjoyment.

According to Derek Field, head of Riverside Hockey Club’s junior division, the objective of the tournament is to celebrate the energy and exuberance of the youth within the community through the fun and active sport of hockey.

“This is our eleventh year hosting this tournament and every year the attendance numbers have grown. This year we are hoping to out-do last year’s participation of 91 teams! It’s a great family day out where the kids are always the focus and we are delighted to have Spur involved as a main sponsor,” he said.

The Spur Riverside Festival has become a highlight in the club’s and local community’s sporting calendar. This year families can look forward to lots of activity both on and off the pitch with music and delicious all-day catering being provided by Apache River Spur and Riverside Sports.
