Durban hosts basketball tourney

PEACEPLAYERS South Africa (PPSA), an organisation which has used the sport of basketball to unite, educate and inspire youth in communities where there is a social divide since 2001, will host its highly anticipated City Wide Tournament on 26 October at Hoy Park Recreational Sports Complex in Somtseu Road from 7am to 3pm.

The City Wide Tournament, PPSA’s last event of the year, is PPSA’s biannual event that brings together over 600 youth from its primary and high school programmes. Throughout the year these students are coached by youth mentors from their community who are also in a development programme (aged 18 to 25). Additionally, PPSA invites approximately 100 youth from external schools in the Durban area.

This Championship Tournament will crown one school team in each division as the 2019 PPSA City Wide Tournament Champions. The public is invited to join in on the day to witness how PPSA bridges divides through collaborative teamwork using the sport of basketball.

PPSA currently has programming at 22 primary and high schools across Umlazi, Lamontville, Wentworth, Molweni, and in the Central Business District.

“Our coach mentors facilitate life skills sessions through the sport two times a week in their respective schools and games are played once a week in our Cross Community Peace League. PPSA programmes produce young adults with workplace related skills preparing them for the future as productive leaders who are ready for permanent employment,” said Douglas Nedab,
