Try your hand at bowls – Durban Bowling Club hosts free event

Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Why not try your hand at a game of bowls?

THE members of Durban Bowling Club invite the community to join them on the greens for a free game of bowls on Saturday, March 18, at 13:00.

Margaret van der Lingen of Durban Bowling Club said a game of bowls is a great activity for all ages.

“It’s a game you can enjoy at any age and with no experience. Young people from the age of 12 years old are very welcome. So many teenagers are now playing in Port Natal Tournaments and with great success. The old adage ‘bowls is old man’s marbles,’ is no longer true. Novices are also welcome. The invitation is not just open to the Berea community but to anyone who wants to play bowls,” she said.

“The aim of the game is simple. Get your bowls as close as possible to a small white ball called the Jack. It might sound easy, but the fact that the bowls do not travel in a straight line seriously adds to the tactical challenge. At the club, we provide coaching by experienced bowlers. We also provide bowls that can be used for initial play. Only takkies or flat-soled shoes are permitted,” said van der Lingen.

Durban Bowling Club is situated at 65 Gladys Manzi Road. There is ample parking available. To sign up for Saturday’s game, email your name, the number of persons playing and cell number to durbanbowlingclub@mweb.co.za.
