Crafty indeed
A well-stocked craft box is one of things we all should have in our homes; they’re ideal for rainy days when you need to entertain the kids or have some time alone to work on a passion project.
What you need to get started
1.Pens and pencils: metallics, fabric markers, crayons, felt-tip colour pens and coloured pencils.
- Glue: glue stick, PVA or a glue gun
- Paints and paintbrushes: acrylics, poster paints, and brushes in various sizes
- Colored paper, card and patterned scrapbook paper
- Scissors – also ones with zig-zag edges
- Small sewing kit, buttons and safety pins
- Pinking shears and a craft knife
- Small hammer and nails, drawing pins
- String and fishing wire (perfect if you’re hanging decorations)
- Self adhesive googly eyes, wooden ice-lolly sticks, paper straws, beads and stencils, plus bits of fabric, cotton and wool.
How to organise your craft box
- Working with arts and crafts is a messy job, so you want to be able to quickly tidy up all the bits and pieces when you’re done.
- You can either invest in a craft storage trolley or buy a portable toolbox with lots of useful compartments.
- Put up floating shelves or opt for a custom-made storage cabinet if you want a craft station and have the space and budget for one.
- Always group similar items together.
- Store things in labelled glass jars or keep useful containers with lids, like old jam jars, yoghurt and ice cream tubs.
- Label everything!
Stocking up
- Craft materials needn’t be expensive; markets, haberdasheries, bead shops and second-hand stores are treasure troves for fabrics, ribbons or odds and ends.
- Nice to know: A voucher to an art or craft store makes a fabulous gift.
- You’re never too young to start – let your children get enthusiastic about their own craft and DIY boxes.
