Fun, sensory kids’ rainstick craft

Your children will have a great time building these homemade rainstick instruments and exploring sound with them!

Homemade rainsticks are a terrific craft for kids as well as a fun science experiment. Your children will enjoy the creative freedom of being able to paint their rainsticks and will especially enjoy using them to generate music and experiment with different sounds produced by the various materials placed inside the sticks.

What you need

  • Durable cardboard tube
  • Paint
  • Brown paper grocery bag
  • Yarn
  • Rubberbands
  • Scissors
  • Craft wire and/or pipe cleaners
  • Beads, grains, beans, or other material for the rainstick’s interior

How to make it

  1. Begin by painting the cardboard tube. Allow it to dry.
  2. Make two circles out of a large paper shopping bag. Crumple the paper to make it velvety and worn-looking. Add some fringe around the circle’s edge.
  3. Using a rubber band, secure one circle to the end of your cardboard tube.
  4. Experiment with different filling methods for your rainsticks.
  5. When you’re satisfied with the sound of your rainstick, rubberband the opposite end with the other paper circle.
  6. Tie some various coloured yarn pieces on each end.
  7. Make music and experiment with sound using your own rainsticks!
